Got involved in internet commenting…. But it was such a worthy cause!!
Seriously, if you read this:
NativeNewYorkerCollapseI think its great that you put that creep in his place; people like him need to know that acting this way can blow up in their face at anytime. Despite being a straight male, I totally understand how just whistling at someone can make them extremely uncomfortable - especially on a quiet street or the subway.
At the same time, ladies need to understand that sometimes “catcalls” are just guys’ attempts to be friendly and flirty. I met my current girlfriend by whistling at her when she got on the train I was riding, smiling at her when she looked at me and then chatting her up. Honestly, I was surprised myself that it worked but the point I’m trying to make is:
Ladies, not EVERY guy who offers unsolicited enthusiasm about how attractive you are is a creep that needs to get punched!
Isn’t it pretty obvious that the guy doesn’t ”totally understand” why whistling at a girl is a fucking creeper move? I thought so. And then I commented so. Without even swearing. And now I’m going to go to bed and NOT continue to compose witty retorts in my head….

This is good, and for once the comments don’t make me want to throw up. There’s actually good discussion/opportunities to help people understand.
When I’ve explained sexual harassment to men in the past I’ve been struck at their confusion over why it is a big deal. How is someone whistling at you threatening, they ask? Here is what they don’t understand. Those moments, which may seem insignificant and small, create an unsafe environment in which women are forced to live. Last month, after I yelled at some men in a car who made kissing noises at me, I was terrified to then walk down a quiet downtown street out of fear that they’d circle around in their car and hurt me. These moments force us to operate in a state of fear. They define who is in control and who can have their control taken away. And I’m so fucking tired of it that I’m starting to snap. I’m now hitting people…
